Hotels in Antigua Guatemala: prices, timing and areas
Antigua Guatemala is a small colonial city on the UNESCO list, with cobbled streets at the foot of three volcanoes. Most guests use it as a base for the old town, the coffee farms and treks up Acatenango or Pacaya, so they stay about four nights on average. The city is small and easy to walk, and the rooms are mostly small guesthouses and boutique hotels in former courtyard houses. Prices can swing sharply between the rainy and dry seasons and during Semana Santa. This list has 350 properties, from a hostel bed to five stars by the cathedral. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Antigua: the month, the day of the week and how close to Parque Central you want to sleep.
When to book a stay in Antigua for less
It is cheapest in the rainy season, between May and October. July is usually the bottom of the market, about 27 percent below the average, as afternoon downpours keep some travellers away even though mornings are often sunny. The priciest stretch is the dry season, December to April, and the absolute peak is April with the Semana Santa celebrations, when rates can climb by a third. The arrival day matters too: Wednesday is the cheapest, Friday the most expensive. Antigua lives on weekends and festivals, so for a dry-season trip, and especially around Easter, it is worth booking about three months ahead.
What a stay costs by property type
Antigua has a wide price range for such a small city, because hostel beds sit alongside historic houses turned into five-star hotels with a spa. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and plain guesthouses on the side streets; you pay the most for a boutique courtyard hotel near the cathedral. Below are indicative nightly rates.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed | from approx. GTQ 80 |
| Plain guesthouse or private room | from approx. GTQ 175 |
| Mid-range hotel | from approx. GTQ 310 |
| Boutique hotel in a former house | from approx. GTQ 605 |
| Five-star hotel with spa | from approx. GTQ 1 750 |

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
The most properties and the most demand are in the historic Centre, within a walk of Parque Central, the cathedral and the La Merced church. This is the most convenient area and it holds the highest rates, especially in houses with a view of the Santa Catalina arch. It is cheaper and quieter on the edges, in areas such as Jocotenango, San Pedro Las Huertas or Ciudad Vieja, a few minutes from the centre by tuk-tuk. Because the whole city is small, even a room outside the very centre does not cut you off from the sights, and it can be noticeably cheaper.
Which stay in Antigua suits whom
- First time in Antigua. The Centre is the easiest base, within a walk of Parque Central and the cathedral. From here it is close to most churches, cafes and tour offices.
- For families. Family rooms in guesthouses with a courtyard and garden, away from the busiest party streets. Close to museums and the market, and the cobbled centre is easy to cover on foot.
- For couples. Boutique hotels in former colonial houses, some with a terrace and a volcano view. In the evening it is a short walk to the restaurants around Parque Central.
- With breakfast. Many guesthouses serve breakfast on the courtyard or terrace in the rate, often with local coffee. Handy before an early start to sightseeing or a trek.
- Base for the volcanoes. If you plan to climb Acatenango or Pacaya, pick a place in the centre near the tour offices, ideally one that lets you leave your luggage during the hike.
- With airport transfer. The international airport is in the capital, about an hour away. Some hotels offer a transfer, which makes the trip easier after a night flight.

When Antigua is more expensive
It is more expensive in the dry season, December to April, when the sky is clear and the volcanoes are in view. Prices rise most during Holy Week, with the famous Semana Santa processions, when the city fills with guests from across the country and abroad. For that period it is worth booking well ahead. The rainy season, May to October, is cheaper and less crowded, and the rain usually comes only in the afternoon.
